Portugal is a country of great natural beauty, culture and history. The best way to explore this tiny European country is by visiting its many cities and towns. However, you should also make an effort to see some of its natural wonders like the Douro River, which snakes through northern Portugal. Here are five places in Portugal that you must visit if you have limited time:

Sintra
Sintra is a town in the Lisbon District of Portugal, located on the Portuguese Riviera. It's known for its romantic landscapes, historical castles and natural environment.
Sintra is a popular tourist destination due to its many historical sites such as Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle), Pena National Palace and Palacio Nacional de Sintra (National Palace).
Porto
Porto is a great place to visit. It has a lot of history and culture, but also some amazing food. The city is surrounded by the Douro River, which means you can take tours down it or just walk along its banks and enjoy nature.
Porto has some fantastic museums like Museu do Vinho do Porto (Port Wine Museum), which gives visitors an insight into how port wine is made and how it became so popular around the world; Museu da Cerveja (Beer Museum); Museu do Chocolate (Chocolate Museum); as well as others that highlight Portuguese artistry across many different fields including fashion design and architecture!
Faro
Faro is a city in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. It is the capital of the Algarve, and is also the seat of the municipality of Faro, which comprises the city itself and several outlying towns and villages in the southern part of the Algarve.
Faro has been continuously inhabited since 100 B.C., when it was founded by Romans as a trading post on an island off shore from present day Olhao (then called Ossonoba). The city was later occupied by Moors who built a mosque here and made it one of their main ports on their way back from North Africa with gold, slaves, ivory and other valuables. In 1189 King Sancho I captured Faro from his brother Ramiro II who had taken refuge there after losing control over Lisbon which then became part of Portugal under Afonso Henriques who eventually became its first king after defeating his mother Queen Teresa - making him Europe's youngest monarch at age 14!
Obidos
Obidos is a town in Portugal, located in the district of Santarém. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Portugal's most visited destinations by tourists.
The town was founded by the Moors in 868 AD when they began building their castle on top of an old Roman fortification, which still stands today at the highest point of town (Castelo de Obidos). The name "Obidos" comes from Arabic meaning "place where there are wells".
Lisbon
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, and it's also the oldest city in Western Europe. It has a population of 545,245 people, making it the country's largest city and main cultural centre. Lisbon was founded in 1147 by refugees from Moorish attacks on their previous settlement at Alentejo (then called Alcácer do Sal). The Portuguese Reconquista took place during this period; after defeating their Muslim foes at Santarém (1147), the victorious Christian forces pushed southward into territory held by Spain until they reached Lisbon. The city became an important trading post between Spain and other European powers thanks to its natural harbour - one of Europe's safest ports due to its location near sea channels that connect Atlantic Ocean currents with those flowing southward along African coasts - which helped establish Portugal as a maritime power throughout much of early modern history
